An ultra-trail is a sporting trail competition, or natural race, over a distance of ultramarathon, that is to say a run in a natural environment (forest, plain, mountain) over a very long distance, on a generally marked out course. According to the varying definitions of organizers and specialists, this "ultra" distance is either greater than the 42 kilometres of the marathon2, or greater than 80 kilometres.
A long distance race in the middle of nature, carried out in several stages (rest hours) or in complete autonomy (bivouac) or with a difficulty of orientation (unmarked course), will be referred to rather as a nature raid.
